Serene Shade Tree
Perhaps I knew you once before
Or sat beneath your shade;
A simple tree in lonely fields,
Under which worries fade;
You knew my soul’s desires
‘Fore I chose you as my own
I, to be your caretaker
And you to be my home;
I wake up and the distant sun
No longer casts its light,
And with its flame did disappear
My early morning plight;
So do I stay here through the night,
Your earth under my nails?
Or someday, when your leaves do fall,
Will your love for me fail?
